The new LeonardoCeramica showroom

An old industrial plant reconverted into a modern exhibition space with an eclectic and versatile soul. A non conventional place, where the geometric division of the space, niches, all over installations and large vertical walls (especially suitable for enhancing the innovative 120x120 cm extra-size formats) have given a totally revolutionary look to the new LeonardoCeramica showroom.
Conceived almost as a museum, where hanging on the walls are the tiles framed into light profiles of light coloured wood, the showroom is the admirable synthesis between style and technology where impressions, colours and lights find their minimal essence.
The display brings together the charm of industrial archaeology – in some parts deliberately left in tact as the testimonial of an important piece of our country’s contemporary history – with the lush vegetation of the four large vertical gardens and two tropical trees. This is not a casual choice, but a clear appeal to the respect that Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola has always showed for the environment and for people through its work.
The new LeonardoCeramica showroom designed by architect Alessandro Bucci of Faenza is located in Imola next to the Cooperativa Ceramica offices

Students of the Schwabisch Gmund University (Germany) are the winners of the first edition of the contest “Talent for Tiles” organised by Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola, coordinated by Aldo Colonetti (Science Manager for IED (European Design Institute) – Editor of “Ottagono” magazine). In addition to winning the first prize for the “Vena” project designed by Christoph Kirchner, Moritz Kohn, AntonioKramer Fernades and Markus Gillhuber, students of the German institute also won third place for the project “Terra verde” created by Peter Kraft, Jochen Maria Weber, Timo Rohrig and Moritz Fuhrmann. Italian students Giacomo Lipari and Caterina Benini of ISIA institute Faenza (RA) earned second place on the podium with their project called “VelveTile”.
Interest raised for this first edition of the contest was aimed at the spaces between buildings, between streets and buildings, uncared for vertical surface and all of those places that have escaped design. It is precisely in the care or lack of care for these “non places” that we can measure comprehensive urban quality, the pleasure and liveability of cities.
The award ceremony took place in the late afternoon on April 12th at the Triennale of Milan, whilst the projects will be on show from April 12th to 17th at the International Furniture Show of Milan in a 200m2 area dedicated to the contest.

COOPERATIVA CERAMICA D’IMOLA AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Nature and technology combine to give birth to a new concept in ceramic tiles which places the relationship between man and the environment at the centre; an inseparable combination for the conscious achievement of eco-efficient corporate principles as well as those of environmental eco-compatibility, sealed with three recognitions such as ISO 14001 Environmental Certification, the production of ceramic products with the Biogres and Progetto life trademarks.
Environmental Certification ISO 14001

The environmental management system of Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola - in reference to the UNI EN ISO 14001 Normative- was imposed on the basis of the following principles:

Protection of the environment and natural resources:

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola strongly believes in the value of the environment and feels that its industrial production objectives should be pursued and fulfilled using strategies and facilities that allow the optimal and efficient use of the resources and in complete respect of the environment.
It is for this reason that Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola focus on minimizing the environmental impact of its production of ceramic tiles and optimizes the use of natural resources thanks to the recycling processes which recover the waste from the various raw and cooked processing as well as optimizing the water supply resources and the reutilization of recyclable material for packaging.

Efficient and effective energy policy:

Through the introduction of optimized plant solutions, Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola is devoted to constantly reducing the energy consumption of the production processes.The majority of the electrical energy utilized is produced in-house through the use of the most modern cogeneration systems

Respect for the ecosystem:

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola is dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of its industrial production in order to protect the entire ecosystem.
Therefore, Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola completely recovers all of the water used in the working processes thus reducing the discharge to zero; it performs continual monitoring of the significant emissions in order to achieve a high level of reduction of the pollutants that are critical to the environment, it conducts complete differential waste collection of the paper, plastic material, wood, steel and copper.

Biogres

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola has undertaken a new project: to create its own porcelain stoneware composed of a blend which combines traditional mixes with materials that derive from the recovery of raw and cooked scrap as well as the residue from the depuration processes. This combination gives birth to the Biogres brand which characterizes the production of Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola with ecological quality and aesthetics.
The Biogres brand products have the following distinctive characteristics:

100% reutilization of the raw waste, with the reduction in the use of new prime materials and protection of the natural resources;

100% reutilization of the water used for processing and consequent reduction in the water requirement, thus protecting the water resource of the territory;

100% recycling of the cooked waste;

Reutilization of the non-ceramic waste for the recycling processes and using them in other production processes;

100% recycling of the depuration residue;

20% reduction of the energy consumption through the installation of high energy performance system solutions;

Over 95% of the energy required is generated through in-house production using cogeneration systems;

15% reduction of the CO2 emission;

Absence of volatile organic substances;

Containment of the emissions into the atmosphere which is by far inferior to the environmental limits required by the Italian legislation.

Life 05 ENV/IT/00875 P.S.V. project (Polishing Sludge Valorisation)

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola has received recognition on behalf of the European Union which has chosen the P.S.V. project for the Life Ambiente project which involves the creation of an ecological process for the utilization of the waste that derives from working the ceramic and similar materials (marble, granites) with the fine tuning of an innovative process that involves reactive sintering.
Apart from the recovery and utilization of the primary and secondary material, which are currently stocked at the dump, this process involves zeroing the environmental impact of the processes that involve smoothening and working the ceramic material and the generation of new products that are entirely recyclable.

Advantages for the Environment

Recovery and return to the environment of water used in the work processes and polishing of ceramic materials.

Recovery and valorisation of raw and secondary materials currently stored in dumps.

Zeroing of the environmental impact of the work processes and polishing of ceramic materials.

Full recyclability of the new products.

With this rapid ceramurgic process innovative materials for the construction industry and industrial installations will be obtained.

When eco-sustainability joins with the production processes

These days the expansion of human activity moves at the same pace as the reduction of the capacity of the ecosystem to regenerate itself. An example of this is the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, such as oil, or the deforesting of the Amazonian jungle: if the ecosystem had an elevated rhythm of production, we wouldn’t be worrying about our own needs and those of the future generations! It is for this reason that today, more than ever, eco-sustainability is a value to follow and identify with.
In such a framework, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola, always attentive to the dynamics that concern the respect for the environment and the person, has already been working for several years. Through adequate identification and installation of the technical resources and plants, the company is moving closer all the time to a “Green” policy geared towards a company that is focused on eco-efficiency and sustainability; in order to be “effective and efficient” in a world market that is always more global, but without for this reason leaving behind some fundamental values of company ethics. Being ambassadors in the world of Made in Italy also happens because of choices of responsibility, and not only productivity.

Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola has activated a series of initiatives to make itself and its employees “ecologically aware” and more attentive in their daily activities.

Everyday, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola recovers 98% of the waste that derives from their own industrial activities and offices, reconverting it into other uses (percentual certified by Certiquality, Ref. Norm ISO 14001).

Everyday, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola saves the equivalent of approximately 11 tons of oil (the quantity required to make 4 round-the-world trips with a car!) thanks to the installation of the last 3 co-generation plants (currently there are 6 of them installed, of various sizes). The savings made by such plants are certified, or are in the course of certification, by the Electrical Energy and Gas Authority.

Everyday, for the benefit of the national electrical system, Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola is ready to suspend, without receiving any advance warning and in any hour or day of the year, the electrical supply to its own industrial plants, for a noticeable reduction of energy traffic. All of this is to ward off any possible interruptions of electrical current, caused by congestion in the network traffic, along with a relative Blackout, done in order to protect the citizen, their homes, workplaces and schools. Such adhesion to the programme of possibility of interrupting the electrical supply is regulated by the AEEG deliberation number 289 of 2006 and 122 of 2007.

Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola offers its contribution in support of the guaranteeing domestic consumption of natural gas: indeed, when faced with exceptional events that could in some way endanger the distribution of gas during the winter months and could put the final clients in a risk situation, it has agreed that it would reduce the consumption of methane, so as to ward off any possible interruptions to domestic users. (AEEG deliberation number 200 of 2009).

ClipTile: ceramic flooring with an automatic clip

Technological research connected to the development of new products is one of the foundations of the entire activity of Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola. In this framework ClipTile was born. It is a system for stoneware that, thanks to the innovative plastic support with a precision automatic clip, allows state-of-the-art tile laying requiring only a few, simple steps.

ClipTile is quick to lay, versatile and elegant. The pavements created utilising this system, which artfully combines technique and aesthetics, are ready to use and may be walked upon immediately after laying, in that there is no need for glues and grouts for their application and consequently, the risks of dirtying them are also eliminated.

The elevated technical performance (class Bfl-S1 flame resistance, suitable for heated flooring, elevated acoustic absorption, anti-allergy) and the great variety of aesthetic solutions (Through-body stoneware and glazed stoneware, with natural, lapped and brilliant sanded finishing, with a wide range of chromatic and format solutions) make ClipTile a valid system for flooring of the domestic environment and for those of commercial environments, small or large.

Ideal for renovations – the technology of dry joints, without glues, allows precise laying on any type of old flooring: marbles, granites, ceramic tiles, terracotta, linoleum, without the need for demolition – ClipTile is also perfect for new flooring, adapting itself to the cement preparation and to any kind of support.

Carlotta Gollini
Direct + 39 0542 601637

Pierluigi Papi
Mobile 338 3648766

Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola Press Office
ufficiostampa@imolaceramica.it

Talent for Tiles

“Talent for Tiles 2010” is the title of the first edition of the international competition on the innovative uses of ceramics, as seen in an urban key, promoted by Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola and coordinated by Aldo Colonetti (Scientific Director IED – Ottogano Director), with the collaboration of Michele Capuani and the Cumulus Association (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media).
The interest of this first edition will be directed towards those spaces that lie between buildings, between streets and buildings, on the neglected vertical spaces, on all those places that planning does not consider. It is precisely in the attention dedicated to the “non-places”, or in the absence of them, that one measures overall urban quality, the pleasure and the liveability of the cities.
The new technologies for the production of ceramic material open new possibilities for the realisation of coverings and products for recognisable urban decoration. This competition aims at producing projects for the large vertical surfaces of the future cities, enlarging the range of action of ceramics, shifting it in other urban decoration uses (surfaces, urban elements, vertical walls), in contamination with other materials (plastic, glass, aluminium, etc.). Without obviously omitting all the aspects joined and connected to sustainability: in the case of projects of urban redevelopment, especially in the increase of filtering surfaces, and of the green area available pro capita, recycling and reuse of materials.
The competition is open to students in international design and architecture schools. In this first edition the participating schools are: Ecole superieure d'art et design de Saint-Etienne (France), IED of Rome, ISIA of Faenza (RA), Lund University (Sweden), Schwabisch Gmund University (Germany).
All the projects must be delivered on or before 31 December 2010 and undergo the evaluation of the Jury, which will select the 3 best projects.
Members of the jury of the first edition of the “Talent for Tiles” competition are several illustrious personalities such as: Mario Botta (architect), Marc Sadler (designer), Santiago Miranda (designer), Marco Romano (historian – urban planning), Stefano Bolognesi (President Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola) and Matteo Zauli (Director of the Carlo Zauli Museum).
Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola will make a themed collection of the projects that have been realised in addition to exhibiting the same at the Triennal of Milan on occasion of the Furniture Exhibition planned for April 2011.
